Each year thousands of women from all walks of life find themselves with an unplanned pregnancy. There is no set age, but it is a known fact that it can be a teenager who just wants to earn her high school diploma or a single mother working to support her children and just can not support another child.
Every year 1.1 million teens aged 15 through 19, end up in an unplanned pregnancy. That is about 3,000 pregnancies daily. Of those million, 155,000 reside in the state of Texas. Texas compared to the United States rates as the second highest of births to adolescents aged 15 to 17. Texas rates as the third highest for pregnancy of adolescents aged 15 to 17 years of age. Fifty percent chose to parent and forty percent terminate their pregnancy while only two percent chose adoption.
About 65 percent of those teens drop out of high school. Those teens that marry because of pregnancy will eventually divorce. These teens end up as single parents due to the father of the child walking out and leaving the teen mom to raise her child alone. About eighty percent of these teen moms will eventually end up on welfare. According to surveys conducted in criminal institutions, more than seventy percent of the population came from fatherless homes.
What can you do to change such a life changing event? First become educated on what adoption really is. Adoption has changed dramatically thanks to adult adoptees and our legislators who listened and cared enough to change adoption laws. Because adoption has changed drastically in the last few years, we want to make you aware.
In the past, stories surfaced through the media and movies about babies being snatched right after birth and taken away from the birth mother. Incidences which occurred under secrecy, as faceless that the birth mother was left with only the hurt to wonder who had her baby and how was her baby doing. As the years passed nothing was ever said as all records of the birth and adoption were closed. Both adoptees and birth parents needed an act of Congress to get information. Because of these people and due to many problems these individuals now faced, laws changed.
Today adoption is the most beautiful experience you can participate in. Birth parents have the right to view profiles and pictures of different families and decide who they like for their child. Birth parents have the opportunity to meet adoptive parents and establish contact and a source of communication. Birth parents will know how their child is progressing. Adoptive parents are expected to under go an extensive background check, to participate in parenting classes, and to talk to their child bout adoption and their birth parents. Adoptive parents need to be open-minded and willing to assist the child to seek their birth parents when the child reaches 18 years old.
