Getting To Know Us

What We Like to Do for Fun

Family+vacation--Bahamas[1].JPG

Family vacation to the Bahamas
Some of James’ hobbies include:  music, software development, and playing games.  I like to play soccer, tennis, Frisbee, and fly kites.  On occasion, he also likes to invent and create new things, whether it is a new song, or a new piece of software.  Some of Erin’s hobbies include:  reading, attending theatre, scrap-booking, and catching up with friends.  She has a group of friends from school and they are putting together their own website to share photos, blogs, and messages with each other.   Graelen’s favorite activities include:  soccer, playing dress-up, dance, and legos.  She plays in a soccer youth league and takes a dance class as well.  Even though we have our own interests, we spend a lot of time doing things together as a family.  Our favorite thing to do is travel, whether it’s a day trip, long weekend, or vacation.  On the weekends, we like to try new restaurants.  With our friends, we try to have a monthly board game night because we all enjoy playing cards and games.  We also love going to movies, although we usually save those for when Erin’s parents baby-sit.

Why We Will be Great Parents

James is a classically trained musician and plays several, instruments, so our upstairs loft has been turned into a music room. We have several computers in the house, including one for our daughter, which offers learning games.  Erin’s favorite hobby is reading, so our office/guest bedroom looks like a library with all of the bookshelves! There is even a bookshelf devoted to just children’s books.  Reading with our daughter is a nightly ritual. The main rule in our house is nothing is off-limits to a child unless it is dangerous, so Graelen can play any instrument she wants (usually with Daddy’s help!), read a book with Mommy, use the computer, play in the backyard, build Lego towers, color at the table, or watch a DVD. Both of us have been blessed with being successful in our careers and can provide financially for children. We have minimal debt, contribute to our retirement plans and savings account monthly, and have an emergency fund should something unexpected happen. Our work schedules allow us flexibility when it comes to children. Erin usually goes to work early in the morning, so James takes Graelen to school because he doesn’t go to work until mid-morning.  Erin picks up Graelen in the afternoons, so Graelen doesn’t have to spend the entire day at school. Planning for our children’s education is important. We started a college fund for our daughter when she was a few months old and will do the same for this child.
