Grief is a natural response to loss. Although every birth mother’s adoption experience is unique, each one feels a measure of loss.
Birth mothers love their children. Because of that love, they bravely choose another future for their child that they cannot give them. But that does not diminish the sadness and grief.
At Adoption Angels, we recognize, accept, and respect the sorrow each of our birth mothers might feel. That’s why we provide free 24/7 care and support to answer questions, address concerns, and offer much-needed comfort.
Healing and joy are possible. Let us show you how.
Recognizing the Stages of Grief
According to mental health experts, there are five stages of grief. Each stage is a step closer to healing. Here are the stages you may experience:
Numbness and Shock
As a birth mother, never confuse feeling numb with not caring for your child. Your body and emotions have gone through tremendous changes.
Bargaining
You may be wondering about the “what ifs.” Thinking about how things could have been different for you and your child is a natural progression.
Depression
This stage is when you may struggle with the depth of the loss.
Anger
Your anger could be aimed at others for not helping you or yourself.
Acceptance
This stage means you are coming to terms with your emotions and feelings. You are moving forward.
Choosing Adoption Angels as Your Adoption Agency
At our agency, you are our priority. We understand the incredible sacrifice every birth mother makes and meet with you regularly to walk through each stage of grief. Our counselors are always available.
We help you acknowledge your feelings about the adoption. Each one is valid, and you should never deny them. Your adoption situation is unique to you, and how you feel may not be the same as other birth mothers. That’s okay. Let your healing journey take all the time it needs.
It’s essential to focus on yourself. Healing comes with reflection and also enjoyment in life. Do the things you love with people who love you.
Finally, don’t hold your feelings in. Share with our counselors your various moods. One day, you may be content and happy; the next, you may be filled with sadness. The highs and lows are normal.
Consider Open or Semi-Open Adoption
Many birth mothers have found comfort in continuing a relationship with the adoptive family and their child. They realize their child is loved and cared for. You can learn to be proud of your decision and feel you made the right choice for you and your child.
