Adoption is a complicated journey for everyone. There are laws governing the process and rules to follow. With today’s adoptions, the birth mother selects the potential adoptive couple.
Waiting couples must decide upfront what limitations they have for adopting a child. The more limitations you have, the longer you may wait.
Filling Out the Adoption Questionnaire
In addition to the many other requirements, potential adoptive couples fill out an adoption questionnaire. You need to note what characteristics you are open to regarding your adoption.
The more open you are, the more frequently an agency can show your photo book. Avoid preconceived notions about your ideal family. You need to determine what you can and cannot accept. Here’s a list of traits to consider:
- Race
- Gender
- Special needs (be as specific as possible)
- Prenatal substance exposure
- History of mental health issues
- Open or semi-open adoption plan
Adoption is not just an emotional journey; it's a financial one as well. It's important to consider your budget when deciding to adopt. Beyond the initial fees, you also need to factor in ongoing expenses. Every expectant mother's situation varies, and some may require more support than others. Moreover, with inflation driving up the cost of living, adoption expenses have increased. So, while embarking on this journey, it's crucial to clearly understand your budget and the potential financial commitments involved.
Does Adoption Angels Let Me Choose?
Adoption Angels does allow you to have a gender preference for an additional fee of $3,000.
We will only show your profile to expectant women with proof of your gender preference. As a result, you will likely have a longer wait time, as often the expectant mother doesn’t know the gender of her baby when she’s shown profiles of potential parents.
If a Birth Mother Chooses Us, Can We Say “No”?
An adoption match is made when both the birth mother and the adoptive couple agree to the adoption plan. If desired, they can meet each other before the baby is born. As you build a relationship with your birth mom, you feel a special connection.
Of course, she is free to change her mind at any time before she signs the termination papers. But what if you’re matched, and it’s determined after birth that the baby has special medical needs? Can you say “no”?
There are no guarantees with any birth. You can choose not to adopt, but once again, it pushes your wait time further back.
